Squid season opens!

Ishima is a small island situated at the easternmost point of Shikoku. There are only three connections by boat a day from Tachibana Bay which is on the opposite shore to Ishima island. So, although Ishima is in Tokushima Prefecture, it is one of the places that people can’t visit easily.

“What are in Ishima where I haven’t yet visited?” While I’d had this thought, I happened to hear about teachers who were enjoying fishing squid in Ishima island. Aoriika (oval squid) season opened in Ishima on October 1st. According to the information, teachers who were transferred to the elementary school and junior high school of Ishima are fishing squid every night when the weather is fine. In addition, even those who had never experienced fishing before are now enthusiastically engaged in squid fishing as well. What is happening there?

Soon, I made a phone call to Ishima Elementary School to ask the question. Since I had a strong interest in the answer over the phone, I asked the person for interview. Everything had been going well with the plan and I got a chance to go to Ishima.

“Hello,” I exchanged greetings with local people I met there while walking. About five-minute walk on a narrow street brought me to Ishima Elementary School and Ishima Junior High School which were next to each other on the same school ground like brothers. Both were an only elementary and junior high schools situated in an isolated island in Tokushima Prefecture. The number of students was 13 in the elementary school and 5 in the junior high school. When I entered the school, we found the black board on which the message, “Welcome!” was written. All the teachers and students knew that we would come to Ishima for interviewing them.

Principal Sasaki welcomed us in the principal’s office of Ishima Elementary School with an amiable smile. Although he was good at fishing as he once won the first prize in a fishing contest, he said, “I had only a small catch this year,” with a bitter smile. The person smiling next to the principal was Mr. Yoshida, a teacher who was just transferred to Ishima Elementary School this spring. “He always comes next to me and throws a fishing line awkwardly. But, he always gets a much better catch, I don’t know why though,” said the principal wonderingly, tilting his head.

Most of the teachers live alone in the teachers’ apartment which has many studio-type rooms. In front of the room of Principal Sasaki, there were many fishing tools that teachers formerly working here left when they were transferred to another school! There is no tavern or restaurant in Ishima. In such an environment of living alone in a place where there is no entertainment facility, squid fishing is a very entertaining activity that they can enjoy in nature. Even those who have never experienced fishing naturally tend to go to the sea with a fishing rod.

The teachers threw the fishing line with so-called ‘egi (fake bait)’ into the water and manipulated the rod to move egi like a real living bait to attract aoriika. You can easily start squid fishing just by preparing a rod and bait. This may be a part of reasons why beginners start squid fishing without hesitation. Principal Sasaki was very ambitious, saying, “I will get a big catch today!” He selected the best bait among those of various colors, attached it to the line, determined a fishing point where some squid ink spots were found, saying, “When you fish at a place on the seawall where you find spots of squid ink, it is highly possible that you can get a good catch,” and dynamically threw the line into the water.

Ishima Port is surrounded by big seawalls and floodgates to protect against tidal waves. Fishing lovers are spotted in the wide port area. “Even if I can’t get any fish, just handling a rod in a night wind is a comfortable moment,” said Mr. Uehara, Vice-Principal of the elementary school. “Many elementary school children here are capable of getting enough fish to be used for dinner when asked to do so because they have lots of experiences to obtain good fishing skills,” said he, smilingly. He revealed his secret that actually he hadn’t yet got any fish this year to me.

“Although one junior high school student is a real master of squid fishing, as he is now engaged in studying for a high school entrance examination, he can’t come right now, unfortunately,” said Mr. Sakamoto, fishing under the floodgate. He was the Principal of Ishima Junior High School, who was spending his first year in Ishima. After squid season opened, he had been going fishing with Principal Sasaki of the elementary school enthusiastically. The silhouette of Ishima island stood out against the moon light. Since aoriika is nocturnal, it is said to be caught most easily under the full moon light. But, at that night, the condition was not so good because the wind was a little strong.

ENGLISH
From the floodgate, I could see the whole view of the port and fishing people lit up by the moon light well. Some people were fishing by staying at the same point, others by changing the point frequently seeking for the better one, and the others by changing the bait frequently. All of them were so much absorbed in fishing, seriously checking the condition of the water, dropping egi in a variety of ways and moving the rod quickly to attract squid. Although some time had passed already, no one had got any squid yet except the one who caught an octopus, at that night.

“I got it!” “Who did it? Where?” “Here!” Big voices sounded in the dark port. When I ran in the direction from which the voices came, I saw aoriika swinging and spitting out ink at the end of the fishing line of Mr. Iwasa, a junior high school teacher. “Mr. Iwasa, you should be careful not to allow a cat to steal your squid this time,” said the sixth graders. I heard that although he got six squid the other day, all of them were stolen by a cat. He carefully put the squid in a plastic bag close to his feet and started to move the rod again to put the egi into the water. “I’m frustrated! I will get one, too, by any means!” said Principal Sasaki in the distance.

Soon, a severe winter will come with north winds to Ishima island which is situated in a pass way of winds in the Kii Channel. During a short time period from the opening of squid season to the beginning of winter, the squid ink-spotted areas in the port are expanded by teachers and students there at night time.
