A room from where we can see Kisha

I felt a little embarrassed when I used the word “Kisha (diesel-powered train)”. It’s because when I left Tokushima and started living in an urban area, I happened to use the word “Kisha” instead of the word “Densha (electric train)”, and one of my friends, who had been raised in an urban area, teased me, saying, “Kisha means SL locomotive, doesn’t it? What time period do you live in?”

To Tokushima people, “Kisha” means a diesel-powered train fueled by light oil. That’s why there is no electric wire over the rail. Such scenery is nothing special for Tokushima people. But, I was surprised to know that this kind of train can be rarely seen in other prefectures. So, some tourists are eager to visit Tokushima to observe Kisha.

Hotel Clement Tokushima is directly connected to Tokushima Station, so that there is a room from where you can observe Kisha well in the hotel. When you enter the room and look down through a big window in the room, you can see many rails and trains under your eyes.“Although there are some accommodation facilities just next to a train station in other prefectures, this hotel is especially popular among train fans because they can see a train station very well from here since there are no overhead wires,” said Mr. Kiuch, a staff member of Hotel Clement Tokushima.

I Looked out of the window, sitting in a sofa nearby. A train carrying passengers was arriving at the platform. Railroad staff were guiding other trains to move for overhaul and cleaning. Train drivers and conductors were walking from the station house to the office, crossing railroads. It was like a miniature landscape and as if I could have picked them up with fingers. So, everybody can enjoy the scenery even if the person is not a train fan. I was able to find the attractiveness of the town where Kisha runs, which I felt a little bit embarrassed at before, from a viewpoint of a tourist.
